The 2017 Changes for New Hope Humanitarian Awards Nominations
When Changes for New Hope was created in 2009, we knew we were in for a tough road ahead. Nobody wanted to support a project that just began yesterday, in a country that most could not find on a map, started by a man who no one had ever heard of. Would you? Neither would I, and I am the man, I am Jim Killon. I wrote articles and emails to literally thousands of companies, individuals, programs, other charities and foundations and heard nothing but crickets. Regardless of how compassionate a cause is and how destitute those we serve are, you are lost in a sea of other organizations and charities who are just as passionate and deserving of the attention that we were seeking. I used my own life savings to get us rolling and eventually, a handful of supporters stepped in, most found us by happenstance or purely by accident. After eight years, we still continue along doing what we can, with what we have, for as many as we can help. We are still considered a micro-charity by some and have make an impact that most can not believe was been accomplished by such a small but determined organization. We are grateful for every single sponsor and for every box that is mailed to us with school supplies, socks and clothing for the children. I was certain that we were not alone. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of little projects dotted all over the world doing what we have been doing in virtual obscurity. Leaders of those projects who have passion and love for those in desperate need. I believe that they have something to say, something to share. I believe that, given the opportunity to share their project, their thoughts and progress with the world, people's apathy and indifference would melt a bit. I am of the opinion that there is enough to go around for everyone. Those hidden organizations, too small to put on an infomercial or place a magazine ad, deserve to be seen and heard too. In fact I feel so passionately about this that I want to present these unsung heroes with a humanitarian award to recognize publicly, to the world that this world is a better place because they are in it.
What this humanitarian award is; The CNH Humanitarian Award has been created to give recognition, build the deserved credibility and raise awareness for humanitarian individuals and the projects they work in, around the world that strive to bring solutions and relief to those who are suffering. At Changes for New Hope, we are intimately aware of the struggles to raise awareness, funding and support and touch the international community with the plight of those we serve. It is our thought that a broader approach is necessary and that should include so many other individuals and projects who selflessly serve the under-served of the world year after year. Why this is an important endeavor; There are many thousands of humanitarians who have gone to remote areas in countries around the world who have dedicated their lives and personal assets, even their personal safety to serve the poor and disenfranchised who have little or no chance for a better life otherwise. Virtually all of these compassionate people serve in near obscurity and anonymity. Their projects are usually supported by a small handful of friends and family members. Fund raising efforts and raising awareness for their projects is difficult and their effectiveness is critically impacted. According to published reports, of the billions of dollars donated by good hearted people in the United States each year, 85% goes to U.S. charities there. Of the remaining 15%, most is distributed to large, well known international organizations. Micro-charities dotted about the world and their leaders must find their own way to make positive changes in the world. This means that the numbers of those who they serve is greatly reduced. By creating this humanitarian award to deserving individuals on a yearly basis, we believe that a wider audience will come to know, understand and be motivated to support their projects. We also believe that the international community will become more aware of the plight of those in destitution and despair and a change of heart will take place. Most people in developed countries do not know that just one dollar spends like three or more in underdeveloped countries. The two-fold benefit of this award will recognize the humanitarian as well as melt international apathy. How we are doing it; The process is simple. On line or mail in nomination and endorsement forms are available for individuals who meet our criteria to qualify. Ten winners each year will be announced publicly and an award plaque will be presented to them. We hope to engage the media as ubiquitously as possible. This is our first year doing this so, as we reach out to corporations and philanthropic individuals for financial support, we may be able to award cash prizes as well. We want to support the individual’s humanitarian efforts in this way. At the very least, the recognition plaque and public acknowledgement will serve to accomplish our primary objectives. Humble beginning to be certain but remember that Apple computer began with a few motivated individuals in a small garage. Your participation and enthusiasm will make this award program a major success. We also look forward to developing a partnership among all of the nominees and their project. An idea and mutual support exchange would serve us all. As you can see, the possibilities are endless. We will be posting all updates on our website at www.changesfornewhope.org as well as our Facebook page namely, Changes for New Hope. When we understand the power of gratitude and love beyond what dollars, pounds, euro or yen could possibly purchase, then we all become a little bit closer to the Human Family that we were born into. We are all one humanity. We have the unified ability to focus on and address issues like child soldiers, mosquito netting for malaria infested areas in the tropics, potable water supplies to parched regions, educational supplies where schools do not even have paper, female genital mutilation, suppression of free speech and expression, anemia issues which can be addressed for pennies per child, issues concerning the elderly and their abandonment and adequate food supplies to every single human on the planet, just to name a few. We know that we can not be everywhere and solve every issue, but we sure can support those that are in those areas and every bit of support and relief is needed and appreciated.
