What Matters for the ChildrenBuilding Self Esteem ...Another looming concern is the emotional well being of the children. Self esteem was virtually non existent among the children. If they live in depression, abuse and neglect, they are feeling worthless. Building self esteem is imperative to lifting the children out of destitution. As we build these little ones piece by piece, they accept their self value as a personal right and learn to assert themselves in new and prosperous ways. What you believe about yourself you will act upon. Extraordinary people do extraordinary things, don't they?
Sharing materials, accepting the creative ideas of others, and not being afraid to express themselves are activities that we encourage whether its art project class, art photography, or just sharing a bag of cookies! Older children are encouraged to assist younger children. This gives them the opportunity to develop leadership skills and fosters cohesion among different age groups. ... for a Change of SceneryThe children tend to re-create what they see in their artwork. They create what they know.
We want to show the children that there's another world beyond the desperation that they were born into, and that they have an important place in it. Our art exhibitions have been instrumental to boost the childrens' self esteem and creativity. In Ticapampa, our 5th art exhibition at the school there, we presented awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd best pieces of artwork. One fine little artist rode home on his new bike as first prize, the next two won board games to take home with them. To date, we have had seven art exhibitions from a city hall auditorium, to school exhibition areas to national museums. |
